A Weekend in the Life of a Fusion Staffer

Behind the Scenes at a Dance Competition

Ever wonder what really goes on behind the curtain at a dance competition?

From the outside, it looks like a chaotic timed machine — dancers flowing on and off stage, awards being handed out, and everything running seamlessly. But from our side of the headset? It’s a beautifully choreographed blend of organization, flexibility, coffee, and genuine love for what we do.

Here’s what a weekend may looks like from the Fusion side of the stage.

Early Morning Hustle

The sun hasn’t even risen, but we’re already at the venue... mopping floors, rolling carts, and checking mic batteries while the stage is still quiet.

We walk the auditorium. We test the lights. We run sound checks. We set up the check-in desk, pass out water, and prep every trophy with intention.

Most dancers and parents won’t ever see this part, but this is where the foundation is laid. It’s peaceful, a little chilly, and buzzing with the energy of what’s about to happen.

Yes, we’re tired. But we’re ready. Because today is show day.

Showtime + Studio Arrival

Soon, the energy shifts. Studios start to arrive rolling in racks of costumes, duffle bags, props taller than we are, and an army of dancers in matching jackets.

There’s a hum in the air: a mix of nerves, adrenaline, and excitement. Our team is at the merchandise desk welcoming studio directors, backstage managing prop zones, and walking dancers through the check-in process if it’s their first time at Fusion.

We hear everything from “I’m so nervous!” to “We’ve been practicing this since August!” And we love every second of it.

The Controlled Chaos of Backstage

Backstage is like an airport, a green room, and a pep rally all rolled into one. Dancers are stretching, warming up, running through counts, adjusting costumes, and sneaking in one last mirror check.

Our job? Keep the flow smooth, the props organized, and the nerves calm.

We: cue routines, call groups to the wings, confirm music, manage quick changes, diffuse panic when someone forgets an earring, and quietly count along to the music with our fingers.

We’ve fixed broken straps with safety pins, taped down props with gaff tape, and helped track down a missing shoe close to call time. True story.

The Magic of Awards

Awards are more than a trophy moment. They're a celebration of everything that happened before the performance. The hours of rehearsal, the missed birthday parties, the tears, the triumphs, the breakthroughs.

We gather dancers and parents, line up medals, and bring the energy on the mic — because every placement, every shoutout, every Showstar banner means something to someone in the room.

And when a senior gets emotional during their final solo award… yeah, we get emotional too.

Reset + Repeat

Every show is different. Some are single-day sprints. Most stretch across two or three days. No matter the format, our team adapts in real-time adjusting call times, taking snapshots of BTS moments, and problem-solving behind the curtain.

By day two, we’ve memorized your studio names. By day three, we’re

cheering just as hard as your teachers are.

At night, we regroup. We reset the awards. We triple-check the morning schedule. And yes… sometimes we eat dinner out of a vending machine.

Why We Do It

Fusion isn’t just about the stage. It’s about creating a space where dancers feel seen. Where studios feel supported. Where the effort, the artistry, and the emotion are celebrated.

We do it for: the dancer who finally lands their turn sequence on stage, the minis who wave to us after every routine, the proud tears from a teacher who saw their student bloom, the family who tells us this was their dancer’s “best weekend ever.”

It’s exhausting. It’s unpredictable. And it’s so worth it.

Thank you for letting us be part of your journey — from the headset to the heart.

With love (and caffeine),

-The Fusion Team
