Let’s be real for a moment…competition season is INTENSE, and there’s no shortage of advice flying around: “Add more tricks,” “Go full out,” “Bigger costume = better score.”
But what do judges at Fusion National Dance Competition actually look for behind the table? Let’s bust a few common myths and reveal the truth about what makes a solo truly shine on stage!

❌ MYTH 1: The More Tricks, the Better
✅ REALITY: Clean technique beats flashy moves every time. We’d rather see a flawless triple pirouette than a messy turning into a death drop. Precision, control, and intentional movement show robust training and maturity.
❌ MYTH 2: If You Nail the Choreo, You’re Golden
✅ REALITY: Performance matters just as much as execution. You could hit every count, but if you’re not emotionally connected or telling a story, the piece can fall flat. We LOVE dancers who make us feel something.

❌ MYTH 3: Just Stay Center Stage
✅ REALITY: Use the entire stage like it's part of your choreography.Dancers who explore different levels, directions, and
floor space bring their solos to life. The stage is YOUR canvas, so paint it with purpose!
❌ MYTH 4: Go Big or Go Home
✅ REALITY: Confidence isn’t loud- it’s authentic. You don’t need to over-sell or be “extra” to command attention. Presence, poise, and self-assured movement speak volumes. We can spot a dancer who believes in themselves a mile away.

❌ MYTH 5: Hit Every Beat
✅ REALITY: Let the music move you, not just guide you.Musicality means more than staying on beat. It’s about understanding the phrasing, dynamic shifts, and emotional tone. Dancers who breathe through the music always catch our eye.
You don’t need a viral TikTok routine, a six-turn combo, or the sparkliest costume to stand out. You just need to bring the best version of YOU to the stage. Be confident, connected, and technically strong.

We’ll be watching and cheering you on from behind the table.
